Appelé Hélios signifiant soleil en grec en référence à la forme solaire de son affichage des heures, il s'agit du premier affichage de l'heure sur 24 heures visualisant la course du soleil et l'alternance jour/nuit. A la fois simple à lire et d'une mécanique complexe, cette pièce de la collection Solar Deity de Frédéric Jouvenot, comprend deux visages correspondant au cycle du jour et de la nuit.
Pour la première fois dans l'histoire de l'horlogerie, un garde-temps affiche l'heure sans aiguilles classiques, ni chiffres, ni disques. Chaque heure est représentée par un rayon du soleil radioconcentrique, c'est-à-dire partant du centre pour aller à la périphérie. Au nombre de douze, ils affichent la course du soleil sur le cadran en nous indiquant l'heure à venir et l'heure échue.
A midi, tous les rayons sont dorés comme la lumière du jour. A ce moment précis, le cadran représente le soleil au zénith. Au fur et à mesure, les rayons deviennent noirs les uns après les autres dans le sens horaire, le cadran s'obscurcit et annonce la nuit. Minuit est représenté par douze rayons sombres réfléchissants dans la nuit. Pour signifier le retour vers la lumière, les rayons du soleil pivotent à nouveau les uns après les autres jusqu'à midi effectuant ainsi un cycle complet de 24 heures.
La lecture instinctive de l'heure est conservée. En effet, chaque heure garde son emplacement conventionnel et les minutes, quant à elles, sont indiquées dans un cartouche central muni d'un index effectuant un tour complet sur le disque fixe des minutes. L'ensemble conservant l'écart angulaire classique d'une montre laisse la lecture instinctive. Toute la technicité de la complication est enfermée dans le boitier central de 12 millimètres de diamètre et haut de 5 millimètres comprenant pas moins de 100 fournitures, dont 24 rubis qui vont actionner les rayons sautants de l'heure.
Exemple : à 3 H 30 de l'après-midi, les trois premiers rayons sont noirs et l'indicateur des minutes est dirigé vers 6 heures, comme sur un cadran classique. L'écart angulaire classique entre 3 heures et 30 minutes est ainsi conservée. C'est là le tour de force de Frédéric Jouvenot : avoir gardé une lecture conventionnelle du cadran avec un système révolutionnaire d'affichage de l'heure.
Mais son créateur qui a imaginé, construit en trois dimensions et fait le design de cette complication horlogère a également dessiné le boîtier de sa montre en collaborant avec son fournisseur. Il l'a voulu très confortable au poignet, incurvant les cornes au maximum pour suivre la courbe naturelle du poignet. Il a ensuite allégé le design du boitier en évidant les cornes de la montre, lui donnant un aspect très contemporain.
Le mouvement à remontage manuel a été réalisé dans la grande tradition horlogère avec un balancier à vis, la finition des ponts avec côtes de Genève, anglés et polis, ressort de cliquet en acier finition traits tirés, anglé et polis.
