The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph © Longines
Après avoir présenté en 2009 une montre renfermant un mouvement-chronographe automatique exclusif muni d'une roue à colonnes pour piloter les fonctions du dispositif de mesure des intervalles de temps, Longines imagine de nouveaux écrins horlogers pour ce calibre d'exception offrant un confort d'utilisation exceptionnel. Le développement de ce mouvement inédit, confié à la société ETA, a été mandaté puis financé par Longines. Baptisés The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph, ces garde-temps réactualisent les équipements de mesure du temps développés par Longines au cours de son histoire.
Longines a mandaté la société ETA et financé le développement exclusif d'un mouvement automatique inédit pour chronographe-bracelet muni d'une roue à colonnes. Ce calibre est référencé L688.2. S'inscrivant dans la continuité de la revalorisation de l'univers de la montre mécanique inaugurée au début du XXIe siècle, cette création répond aux modifications progressives des goûts en matière de garde-temps, à la popularité grandissante des chronographes mécaniques et à la fascination pour les dispositifs horlogers traditionnels. Les chronographes à roue à colonnes correspondent à ces sensibilités ayant à nouveau émergé sur la scène horlogère. Replacé dans le lignage des instruments de mesure du temps créés par Longines, ce calibre constitue l'incarnation contemporaine d'une riche expertise du chronométrage mécanique dont la maison au sablier ailé est l'héritière.
Longines débute la production d'équipements de chronométrage en 1878 avec la réalisation d'un chronographe simple de 20 lignes, référencé 20H et doté d'une roue à colonnes qui commande le mécanisme de chronographe. Les dispositifs de mesure du temps élaborés par la maison au sablier ailé à la suite de cette incursion dans les domaines du chronométrage utilisent presque tous ce principe de conception. Ainsi, tant les calibres pour chronographes de poche élaborés par Longines comme le 19CH (1889), les 19.73 (1897), 19.73N (1909) et 19.73N rattrapante (1922), le 18.72 (1929) ou encore le calibre 24 lignes destiné spécifiquement au chronométrage sportif (1939) que les mouvements pour chronographe-bracelet de la maison horlogère comme le 13.33Z (1913), le célèbre 13ZN (1946) ou le 30CH (1947) recourent à des systèmes de roue à colonnes pour contrôler et actionner les fonctions - différentes selon les calibres – des mécanismes de chronographes.
Cet ensemble d'équipements de mesure du temps compose le fondement de l'engagement historique de la maison Longines dans le chronométrage et le monde du sport. Ainsi, le chronographe mécanique doté d'une roue à colonnes fait figure, chez Longines, de dispositif technique traditionnel et authentique. Les nouvelles pièces The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph prolongent cet héritage horloger, avec les technologies les plus récentes, dans le XXIe siècle.
Muni de 27 rubis, le mouvement L688.2 est un calibre à remontage automatique de 30 mm de diamètre pour 7,90 mm de hauteur. La roue à colonnes dont il est pourvu sert au pilotage des fonctions du chronographe (enclenchement, arrêt, remise à zéro). Ce système, et particulièrement la roue à colonnes qui a été étudiée par les ingénieurs de la société ETA, offre un confort d'utilisation exceptionnel pour un chronographe mécanique en rendant l'enclenchement, l'arrêt et la remise à zéro extrêmement doux. Autour de cette roue en acier bleui, émerge une esthétique forte du mouvement qui aboutit à une réactualisation stylisée d'un système technique traditionnel. Au-delà de son design raffiné, le calibre L688.2 révèle en outre une construction étudiée pour répondre aux exigences de la chronométrie. Longines a imaginé, à ce stade, plusieurs garde-temps pour honorer ce mouvement de haute technologie. Ces attributs d'instrument de mesure du temps associés à la relecture d'un design élégant, traditionnel ou sportif font des trois The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph des montres contemporaines pétries de la grande tradition du chronométrage mécanique.
Pour un premier garde-temps The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph, Longines privilégie des formes traditionnelles et élégantes évoquant les montres qui ont contribué à son succès au cours du XXe siècle. Ce garde-temps dispose d'un boîtier en acier inoxydable ou en or rose de 39 mm de diamètre pour accueillir le calibre L688.2 dont les battements intimes sont dévoilés par un fond transparent en saphir. Avec ses aiguilles dauphines roses révélant la course du temps sur un cadran argenté agrémenté de 8 index, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph affiche un quantième, une petite seconde à 9h, un compteur traînant de 30 minutes à 3h et un compteur traînant de 12 heures à 6h. Un bracelet en alligator brun complète ce chronographe-bracelet au moteur de haute technologie.

Un second garde-temps The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph accorde la primauté à une esthétique classique et raffinée. Renfermant le calibre L688.2 dans une boîte en acier inoxydable ou en or rose de 39 mm de diamètre, ce chronographe indique l'heure au moyen d'aiguilles dauphine rhodiées parcourant un cadran argenté muni de 13 index. Avec son quantième, une petite seconde à 9h, un compteur traînant de 30 minutes à 3h et un compteur traînant de 12 heures à 6h, cette montre, équipée d'un bracelet brun en alligator, abrite avec pudeur un mouvement dont elle révèle la roue à colonnes grâce à un fond transparent en saphir.

Enfin, une troisième série de garde-temps met esthétiquement en exergue les performances du mouvement L688.2. Nommés The Longines Column-Wheel Sports Chronograph, ces montres au design sportif et à la conception robuste renferment ce calibre chronographe dans une boîte de 41 mm de diamètre en acier inoxydable au fond vissé transparent en saphir. Renforcées d'une lunette en acier ou en céramique noire ou grise, ces montres taillées pour la performance affichent l'heure sur des cadrans argenté, noir laqué ou gris brossé soleil. Elles sont équipées de bracelets en acier inoxydable, de bracelets en acier inoxydable avec maillons centraux en céramique noire ou grise ou d'un bracelet en caoutchouc.
