The traditional watch manufactory “A. Lange & Söhne” comes out top of the league table showing the 30 top German luxury brands, published by the business magazine “Wirtschaftswoche” on 12 March 2007.
With a grand total of 246 points out of a possible 300, the watchmaker from Saxony's Ore Mountains stands head and shoulders above all the other luxury brands and pushes the automobile-manufacturer Maybach, leader in 2005 when the tables were last published, down into second place. The score of 92 in the category “brand appeal” – considerably up from the previous total of 79 – contributed greatly to this placing. Along with criteria to do with pricing, this category played a decisive role in the overall score. The league table is drawn up every two years by the Munich “Brand Rating” agency at the instigation of the magazine “Wirtschaftswoche”.
Originally founded in the mid-19th century by Ferdinand Adolph Lange, this watch making company in the small town of Glashütte near Dresden used to manufacture precision pocket watches that ranked among the most sought-after and prestigious timepieces in the world – until the collectivization of the East German watch industry following World War II. However, immediately after the Reunification of Germany, Walter Lange, the great-grandson of the founder, re-established the company and once again made “A. Lange & Söhne” into one of the leading international names in the world of watches. Around three-quarters of the annual production, comprising just a few thousand largely handmade watches, is sold abroad.
